A fun part of achieving anything is gathering the right inspiration to go do it. So, to help with my own goals, I’m making a sort of inspiration board here with this blog post. So here’s some pictures of things I did last year along with some inspirational quotes and commentary that I feel will be a great lead in for this year.
“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
-Henry David Thoreau
Or to put something similar in my own words:
Your actions have to be bigger than your dreams.
Dreams and goals are great, but if I’m not prepared to meet with all the unforeseen work I’ll find on the way there or to discipline myself in practicing the skills needed, then how am I going to get there?
“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.”
This is here for those small goals and habits where a little bit each day might not seem like much but add up. For me that would be things like music and learning new languages.
“Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory.”
-George S. Patton
I feel you definitely need some goals that are scary or tough yet exciting. Running marathons and doing big creative projects won't be easy for me but even if I don't make it to the end, like last year’s attempt at a marathon, I’ll be proud that I tried my best to achieve such a big goal.
"Infuse your life with action. Don't wait for it to happen. Make it happen. Make your own future. Make your own hope. Make your own love. And whatever your beliefs, honor your creator, not by passively waiting for grace to come down from upon high, but by doing what you can to make grace happen... yourself, right now, right down here on Earth.”
“What’s your version of heaven? Do you have to wait till you’re dead to experience it?”
A lot of life seems to be waiting, but these are here to remind me that action makes the life and reality I want, rather than passively waiting. If I want a better or different life than last year, especially one that’s closer to my version of heaven, then I’m going to have to act and change until I find it.
“Arriving at one goal is the starting point to another.”
And finally, goals are only part of the journey. Some are steps to explore myself and my abilities. Others are steps towards even greater goals I might have in the future. It's always great to look out over the landscape and see the distant horizon whenever I climb a mountain. Achieving a big goal gives a similar sense of perspective. You can decide to go explore new horizons or go climb similar heights, but the key is to keep going onward and upwards.
